SOR into Reading

Are these resources Science of Reading aligned?
Yes! Our curriculum designers have gone through extensive structured literacy (SOR) training, and have used that knowledge in the intentional creation of the educational materials in this package.

Hours were spent planning and cross-checking the decodable readers to ensure we did not introduce words with sounds that had not been introduced. We also used the same scope and sequence to create the phonics instructional slides, so all materials you have at your fingertips support each other.

What are decodable readers?
Decodable readers are texts that introduce words and phonics skills in a carefully planned scope and sequence. The order in which those phonics skills are introduced often aligns with the scope and sequence of the curriculum.

Using decodable readers allows students the opportunity to apply the phonics skills they are learning and to build confidence in their abilities to read full sentences and short stories.
Which scope and sequence are your decodable readers aligned to?
There are many scopes and sequences out there when it comes to phonics skill instruction. The one common thread in all of them is that phonics skills should be taught in a simple skills (CVC) to complex skills (Diphthongs) order.

When creating our decodable readers, we developed our own scope and sequence (included in your course bundle) based on the combination of many of the more common phonics skill introduction scopes.
Are decodable books boring?
Many decodable books you may find are not the most interesting for students to read. They have repetitive text, no storyline, and don’t make sense. We made sure to write stories that were engaging, funny, made sense, and reflected the students you have in your classrooms all while being decodable based on a specific phonics sequence.
Are decodable books replacing leveled text?
The science of reading research tells us that systematic, explicit phonics instruction followed by lots of opportunities to practice the new phonics skills in connected text is superior for students learning to read.
